men got their first introduction to Jonny McGovern and his Gay Pimp
character when the comical dance hit “Soccer Practice” hit dance clubs. The
video was unforgettable with it’s incredibly hot, practically naked “frat
soccer boys” gyrating to a pulsating beat. Now, after releasing three full-length Gay Pimp albums and performing live around the world, McGovern is in our living rooms on the new season of LOGO’s The Big Gay Sketch Show. McGovern took a few minutes to chat with us by phone from his home in New York about pimping, his role on the television show and what we can expect when he hosts the 2008 International Hookie Awards at Club Rage on Saturday, March 22. How did your Gay Pimp character come about? I tried out the regular acting route, but I started doing the all the crazy characters I did for my friends on stage, and I started doing one-man shows. As I got more into the East Village comedy scene, I started singing songs for jokes—songs that basically became “Girl, I Fucked Your Boyfriend” and “The Wrong Fag to Fuck With” as part of my standup act. More and more that became more of my act, and I started writing these midnight musicals, one being “The Wrong Fag to Fuck With,” where Gay Pimp was born; and others where characters that are now on The BGSS were born, like Chocolate Puddin,’ an ex-Blacksploitation star from the movie Tranny. Basically the music just melded itself in with my comedy. What do you like performing more, comedy or music?  Comedy
is extremely fun, and there’s nothing better than making people laugh. But I
do get a lot of pleasure from recording and writing music, especially for
other artists and then hearing it played in the club. I really do enjoy
being on the dance floor and being like that’s my jam. I love being on the
road. I’m just gearing up for the summer, which is gonna be tons of dates
all over both doing music and my standup act. I love to perform different
places, especially if I get to travel and see my friends. I can’t wait to
see all my babies in La La Land.Did you ever imagine you would host the 2008 International Hookie Awards at Club Rage? It is an honor to be able to honor the best escorts working today.
